This is my evaluation on how I felt the research went for looking into film festivals and their importance within the industry. I will talk through what I felt my strengths and weaknesses were within this section and I will talk about how I felt this has helped me within my project and how it will help me as a young developing filmmaker. I will then conclude on saying how I think it went and ways in which I could improve my work.
Throughout the process of exploring and researching into film festivals I used a number of resources including books, websites, surveys and interviews. All of this information was interesting and has helped me in learning more about the industry and film festivals worldwide. I found it most useful interviewing people who had worked in the industry and how they felt about film festivals. I also found it interesting how they liked the way there were small independent film festivals and the way they work.
I think that if I did the research again I would have made more connections and asked more people what they felt about film festivals and would have asked more specific question. I would have also asked earlier on as a few contacts such as Laura Ager from the National Media Museum and Salford. I would have also spent more time looking into how to apply and why there are costs. I think that overall the information that I gathered was useful and I found that my strengths were in the approaching of people to as about how they felt about film festivals. I felt this went well and I found this the most beneficial in my research, I also found that I could do this with confidence and talk to them in a professional manner.
Throughout the research process I felt I had a lot of weaknesses which included that I found it difficult understanding what element of film festivals to research. In hindsight I feel I should have looked at how to enter them and the capability to do that. This is where I think I lacked as I had pin holed myself into looking at their importance and their role within the industry. If I were to do this again I would ensure that I looked at film festivals more extensively and look into how I as a young camera operator could get my work shown at a festival.
In the process of researching I think I could have tied it together better with my film idea and looked into film festivals which my film would have fit into as this would have made it more useful for my music video for units 6 and 33. I also think that it would have made it more accessible as I could have specified more. I feel that the research though has impacted me and by cross referencing how the public, people within the industry and the film festivals themselves operate and how they are received.
I found it interesting looking at the Bird Eye View film festival as it educated me on the gender divide within the industry. This was interesting on a personal level as it showed me that there were many types of specific film festivals which aim at target demographic and minorities. I also found it interesting that film festivals like this were around and accessible and that I could use these later in my career.
Overall I feel that my research covers the areas I needed, I feel that there are many areas that could be improved and that if I did it again I would have approached it in a different manner and looked at the areas I wanted to look more specifically and how it would help me both with my course and in my life as a filmmaker. With all this extra knowledge I feel more equipped in making films and knowing the ways in which I can get them viewed within the industry. I also found that it was good making connections within the industry and learning statistics of film festivals. The public survey really was useful as I got a pool of 40 people and found quite a good variety of demographics that answered it and found that what I had predicted of the research was in some cases wrong for instance in the age of the people I had asked. Although in some areas I had predicted the result, for instance in the question on if they felt film festivals help young people, I expected the answers of it being a platform for young developing film makers. I think that this was the most interesting and insightful research I got as it let me see how they are perceived not by people who enjoy film making but the people who will watch films in the end at the cinemas.
